Park Entrances & Visitors Centers
There are two main entrances into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. One is located by travel through Gatlinburg, TN the other is reached by traveling through Cherokee, NC. Both of these entrances have a visitor’s center manned by Park Rangers, Sugarlands Visitor's Center on the Tennessee side and Oconaluftee Visitor Center on the North Carolina side.
There are other ways to get into the park though. In fact the quickest way to get to Cades Cove is by driving through Townsend, TN. You can also get to Cades Cove by taking Rich Mountain Rd. On the North Carolina side, Cataloochee is most easily reached by exiting I-40 and taking Cove Creek Road. There are other ways into the national park and the best way to find them is by getting a park map at one of the welcome centers. Also keep in mind that some of these roads turn to gravel or dirt and you should watch them during bad weather.
