A compilation of the most frequently asked questions about the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which encompasses over a half-million acres in east Tennessee and western North Carolina.


  • Where can I get information to plan my trip to the park?
    Navigate your way through this entire site. It lists not only hours, fees and phone numbers for information within the Park, this website provides detailed info about commercial outfitters, lodging and dining in communities surrounding the park. In addition, an online store has a wide selection of books, maps and guides you can purchase to help make your visit more enjoyable. Smoky Mountain guides are also available online.

    Does the Park have lodging?
    There are campgrounds in the park, but the only commercial lodging within the Park is LeConte Lodge. The lodge is located on the summit of Mt. Le Conte and is only accessible by hiking. Le Conte Lodge requires reservations, which you can make by calling (865) 429-5704. Cabin and chalet rentals in adjacent communities is a popular choice, and you can find hotels and condo rentals as well.

    Can I camp in the Park?
    The park maintains 10 developed campgrounds for both RVs and tents. Campsites for large groups are also available in some campgrounds. Horseback riders may camp in the park's 5 horse camps, though advance reservations are needed. Backpackers may stay in campsites and shelters in the park's backcountry. A permit is required for all overnight stays in the backcountry and advance reservations are required for all shelters and many of the campsites. In addition, there are commercial campgrounds with more amenities in local communities around the Park.

    Can I have my wedding in the park?
    Weddings and other special events require a permit and must follow specific guidelines. If you wish to hold your special event on the Tennessee side of the park, please call (865) 436-1266 for permit information. If you would like to hold your event on the North Carolina side of the park, please contact (828) 497-1930. Smoky Mountain wedding chapels are the most frequent venue for a wedding and there are approximately 30 in the area to assist in every aspect of your Smokies wedding.

    What kind of weather can I expect?
    While in the Park's you can get the current weather by dialing (865) 436-1200 extension 630. When planning your trip in the park, please remember that elevations in the park range from 800 feet to 6,643 feet and temperatures can vary 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit from mountain base to top (see average climate by month). Good planning and weather-appropriate clothing will help ensure an enjoyable visit during any season of the year. Naturally, you can get an extended forecast before leaving home via the Internet.

    Can I bring my pets to the Park?
    Pets are allowed in campgrounds, picnic areas, parking areas, and along roads, but must be kept on a leash (not longer than 6 feet) at all times. Pets are only allowed on two short walking paths--the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail. Pets are not allowed on any other park trails. Kennels are available in the communities around the Park.

    Are there opportunities to ride my bike in the park?
    Bicycling is okay on any park road open to vehicle traffic. Biking on trails is not allowed due to possible damage to trails and the safety of hikers.

    Can I fish in the park?
    Fishing is allowed in most streams year-round in the Park. Detailed info, with complete regulations and a map of fishable streams, is available at three visitor centers and all ranger stations. Fishing licenses can be purchased from local outfitters.

    Can I rent horses in the park?
    Horseback riding by the hour is available from mid-March through late November at four stables in the park.

    Where can I have a picnic in the park?
    Picnic areas are located at Big Creek, Collins Creek, Cosby, Deep Creek, Greenbrier, Chimneys, Cades Cove, Heintooga, Look Rock, Twin Creeks and Metcalf Bottoms.
